   Abstract

Nasal and perianal swab specimens were tested for detection of Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus species (VRE) using real-time PCR (Roche, Inc. analyte specific reagents) and microbiological cultures. Real-time PCR and culture for S. aureus were similar. PCR had adequate sensitivity but culture more specific for detection of VRE.
