A fecal PCR assay for detection of Helicobacter infections in laboratory
rodents was developed. DNA was isolated from murine fecal pellets, and a
region of the 16S rRNA gene conserved among murine Helicobacter species was
amplified. The fecal PCR was sensitive and specific. This assay does not
require euthanasia of rodents, which is especially important for valuable
rodents, such as transgenic mice.
